This wood slab kitchen island was one of my biggest woodworking projects to date. It was also my first kitchen island/woo countertop project! Made from a single piece of locally salvaged Black Walnut and the voids filled with jet black epoxy resin. This slab started out at nine feet long and over five feet wide. Rough cut by me and the final shape was precision cut by a CNC. I even decided to deliver this one personally and help with the installation. Let me know if you have any questions about the build!

Genius! Way out of my league, though. This is like when you see a beautiful girl on the street, adorable, a figure to die for and you ask yourself, what are my chances? None, obviously. Same here. You have to be an artist to turn this level of craftsmanship out. Hey, I can do a wooden box! Seriously, this is a great video. I like the calm demeanor of the narrator (creator)

      1. Free Ma

@Josh Schneider maybe they had the wrong 'doctor' and got injected with who knows what!? it's people in jail for that right now...but I digress.

Awesome ideas and wood working ideas

    2. Yeah, it's me

15k for a piece of wood really? Embarrassing. Both for buyer and seller

    3. Bron Stofberg

Wood / would! And beautiful work 👍🏻

    4. Hedge Fund

Wood or no wood? Hmm What do you want honey? That’s the safest bet. Back to your wooden island, looks great. Awesome Job. Thanks

    5. Steve A

How can there be any negatives on this video. The thing is magnificent piece of work.

    6. nohelani k

I wood have loved it as much of a solid piece as possible! I agree about the notch for the range. It kinda made me sad.

    7. stephen bray

      Wood

    8. liszt 1876

I would love to have a wood counter top. This was my first time watching one of your videos and it looks beautiful (Boston)

    9. Malcolm Funnell

Love wood countertops, wouldn’t have one

    10. potatopotatoe

Wood or not wood Lmfao. Best video yet. Loved the commentary. Also stop feeling embarrassed about doing DEcameras or anything as a job. As long as you're doing your best and not hurting anybody, then you're doing great

    11. Kindanyume .Kindanyume

Wood by far and away - and My personal q I emailed you an hour or so ago before finishing th video (as noted in the email) Wood FTW almost always esp If i win the lotto I always have loved nice wood far more than many other materials. However when we got our place (fixer-upper is an understatement of the century) the original craptacular 1960s cheap as possible kitchen cabinets etc were still there (I question if the carpenter was drunk since there was more off angles than 90% even in the cabinet doors) Well counter top w found a local place that was actually the MFR and not a gouging reseller so we got a custom basic L with proper laminate top for 1/3 the quotes from Home Depot etc (whom would only order from the same source) But since we eventually wish to get a standalone house (we have small condo/townhouse) I would want to take that gorgeous wood with me.. so I would if anything short of an entire desk have you cut it to replace the original laminated MDF on my ikea desk (Yes Ikea did actually make one model of desk thats very good its called a Jerker (Discontinued yrs ago but i was a 99% excellent design only a few small changes I'd have madeto it before production if I had been asked lol), I ended up with 3 of them in my lab.. one for personal main PC and the others are shop benches for other stuff along with 2 old school desks/tables from the 60s)

    12. John Athanasoulis

nice presantation, nice work, its a clear 10. bravo !!!

    13. Harjit Jutla

Beautiful finished piece. I actually appreciate your narration of the process. To answer your end question. I wood most definitely have wood countertops but still have young children.

    14. Iffy

WOOD..this is not a question I live in the UK and we have the BBC and have to pay nearly $221 license fee. We don't get a choice not to pay and can go to prison. So if ppl are watching your channel its because they want too. I have to pay but never watch the BBC...

    15. MordecaiAliVanAllenO’Shea

Hey here’s a pro tip I learned from knife making. You can fill those micro bubble holes with Krazy Glue, which flows like water into holes and cracks to finish off the epoxy fill.

    16. JonDoes

      I'd do wood

    17. Jonathan Broughton

Just wow congratulations to your skill and congratulations to your client for making something so glorious happen win win win IMHO.

    18. Imthe Joat

Great Video, gorgeous countertop. But alas, I, like you would destroy a wood countertop. (Sigh.)

    19. McLain Plumbing

I didn't expect it going into a log cabin either but the client got what he wanted!

    20. Colton Mcclure

Very courteous to not only the buyer but to the viewers as well. High praise to you brotha!!

    21. Laura Hanna

Beautiful. A combination is the best way to go. Some wood, some granite or marble.

    22. Kemesa Myers

      Would have wood

    23. Jeffrey Dodson

Wood not. Now, this might be the single most depressing video I've ever watched on you tube. Why depressing? Because I know in my heart that I will never in my life create something more perfect, beautiful, and passionately-crafted. Heck, last night I put together a pre-fab side table for my kitchen, and three quarters of the way through, realized I had two screws too many, and couldn't figure out where they went -- thus dooming my "creation" to fall apart even sooner than it would have given its mass-produced beginnings. Long comment short: you, sir, are true artisan, and I am humbled by your work.

    24. Tomek Hekin

For the whole life, I had wooden countertops now I am moving to a new house and for the first time I am choosing a stone. Hope I wont regret it.

    25. Dustin Mercer

FWIW - I'd have wood anything except for a kitchen counter top, where I like to bang, clang, burn, cut, and scrape.

    26. Tommy Richeson

      WOULD!!

    27. Sarah Jean

wood absolutely. stove adjacent wood cutting block keeps you from doing dumb things with hot items.

    28. Stuart Jinks

      wood definitely

    29. Electric Bear

Not only would I want to a wooden counter top, I have a wooden counter top albeit, not as awesome as this one! :-)

    30. Giselys Hernandez

I have another question, now since I'm doing my first epoxy wood desk what will hold 3 monitors. I need the desk to be strong, if I don't seal the edges it will stain but hold a better bond, if I do seal them and scuff them it won't be as strong, correct? Since the dye will be a translucent gray will it still stain the wood? Do you think I should seal the edges? And if not is there a way to fix the stained wood? I have 2 slabs of this beautiful wood and I don't want to mess them up if I make a mistake, and it's for my boyfriends birthday.

    31. Robert Sykes

I would have wood countertops, but I'd be hesitant to put that gorgeous piece near the gas burners!

    32. Hannah Bassett

I wouldn’t, I know someone would mess it up and it would break my heart. I have an 1860’s wood baker’s table as my kitchen island and I hate having to watch every guest like a hawk...

    33. firebirdude2

      Wood not. No friggin way.

    34. BRAIN BOX

Playing Music is cool.. But your Commentry is great. It's interesting and informative. (Ik someone has already commented that but i thought I must say this.) Loved your work. I'm new here and i dont regret subscribing you. :)

    35. Colin Morgan

Wood - I would love a wooden countertop but my wife isn't the biggest fan. We've just fitted a new kitchen and went for ceramic. If I'd gone for wood we would have been looking at > 30k based on the costing of this slab. So price is also a factor. Beautiful work!

    36. Mohamed Ibrahim

I love wood countertops more than anything but would probably never get them for myself. Too much maintenance to keep it looking great, besides I’m always making a mess and getting stains out of it would be pain! I’ll just settle with a really big chopping block!

    37. Thiago Casagrande

      Very beautiful work!

    38. dillon sparks

I have a slab of big leaf maple i'm dying to make into a counter top/ leaving a live edge and hoping to finish with a thick bar-top like epoxy coating.

    39. George Fernandez

Great job , great video too. I literally have no reason to watch this . But it was a great watch

    40. emilie gabriel

I love your videos you explain everything and i think wood counter tops are better than other materials !!!

    41. Cameron Brown

That's a lot of money for a table top imo, but looks very cool. Why so expensive?

    42. Jeff Melando

wood, but not anywhere near my cooktop. too much splatter and heat. first time watcher, ended up here from a Sampson Boat Co. video. outstanding content, definitely looking forward to more.

    43. Sean Warren

Would. ;) Knowing I can resurface then takes out the sting of what an animal I am. LOL Now back to my original content... Man, my wallet cries just looking at the thumbnail. 15k huh? Yup, not on my truck driver wages. Also, note, I have made no more money thanks to Corona, though I'd bet my company has. GG on getting out of the game and into your own deal. Thanks for the content, and all the pointers. I'm well educated with composites but with everything, the devil is in the details.

    44. Cody Giron

Absolutely beautiful! I made the mistake of installing marble countertops in my summer home. Marble etches and stains. Wood comes with its own set of conditions, but if treated right, would be what I'd likely choose for the island in my winter home. Love the workmanship here, and would definitely consider reaching out to Blacktail when the time comes.

    45. Jody Bogert

I absolutely “would love” to have a wood countertop, especially like the one in your video. What a talent you have. Absolutely beautiful!

    46. Titty Skillet

Not wood. I’ll take quartzite or granite anyday. Esp for 15,000 bucks.

    47. Rossifan2011

It looks great! Def keep the commentary!

    48. Dave LeValley

I would love to have a wood counter top. Unfortunately, money and several other limiting factors make that a no-can-do. But, having said that, that project there was absolutely top notch.

    49. Ian Vandermey

I would have wood counter tops, something outlandish like brazillian rose wood. haha

    50. Catherine

G'day, definitely Wood. Love these videos and no you do not talk to much. I plan to cut my own tree on my land (l have planted over 55 tress) and try this myself. Look forward to more. Cheers

    51. Sadman Sakib

decameras.info/block/rYuGbJyObbueeps/video.html What about a transparent wooden table ?

    52. Athol Peters

      I wood do it!

    53. Anneka Gill

Hi there this was a cool video to watch. I was after some advice. I found a really nice driftwood branch on the beach and I think it would be a great piece as a coat hanger in my bedroom. What would you do to protect it? Or would you just leave it natural. I’m the daughter of a carpenter so I was gunna ask him what he thought about putting hooks onto it, it seems like pretty hard wood to me. But I want it to look as natural as possible. I appreciate your zeal for what you do it’s nice. the Lord bless you 🙏🏽

    54. Robert da Silva

I would! Job well done. And please keep talking the way you do now. Forget about machine noises or music.

    55. SpArDa

      I wood

    56. David Mosier

      I would wood. Who wood-nt?

    57. Luke Snowbarger

      WOOD

    58. kimberley mansfield

      Would

    59. Joe Layton

I was thinking of doing concrete counter tops with a maple insert cutting board that can be removed after it got beat up. I was planning on making hold downs under the counter and make 2 or 3 more while making the inserts and storing them away for later. Have you ever done something like that? What do you think about something like that and what would be the draw backs?

      1. Blacktail Studio

I haven’t done that, should work though

    60. Alan T

Wow...definitely ‘wood’ after seeing that countertop! Appreciated the video!

    61. Radek R

Would not wood. Maybe if I lived alone but having family it will get abused and eventually destroyed. It looks amazing though, love your work.

    62. David Stewart

This is totally beautiful, but wood is a real no-no in kitchens. You can mitigate the hot pan problem with a grille or trivet, but it's the fat spatter that will ruin it. After a few months' use there'll be a penumbra of staining all around where you cook, unless you confine your diet to steamed vegetables.

Beautiful, but I’d be so worried about damaging the thing it would consume me.

    66. Maklarus Trinity

He talks a lot but also teaching you stuff depends how you Take it

    67. Tim P

no to wood countertops. Your design and craftsmanship were fantastic but I wouldn't trust myself and forever be annoyed if I put a burn mark or similar on it

Have you stopped making videos for casual viewers on DEcameras? 🤔

      1. Blacktail Studio

John 8:24 (Jesus speaking) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he ye shall die in your sins. John 14:9 (Jesus speaking) Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Hebrews 1:1-3, & 8 (God calls His Son "O God" because Jesus IS God in the flesh) 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. 78. S R

AMAZING JOB!! WOW. Just wondering, if they use the stove too much, would it damage the wooden countertop around the stove area?

      1. Blacktail Studio

        We’ll see!

    79. Flightless Bird

Why use epoxy at all? It will degrade etc. I'm no pro. Not trying to be snarky, just wondering. Cheers.

      1. Blacktail Studio

Plastic degrades after a million years or so, wood will degrade after a few hundred. Question should be why did I use wood?

    80. Dog Lover112233

      wood not

    81. Aidan Michalos

What was the point of the bowtie thing?

      1. Blacktail Studio

    82. Martin zekial

Wood for non use counters, non wood for my hard use areas. As a chef I have got to have that solid hard use surface but I love the look and feel of wood.

    83. Paul Wells

      Wood 🪵 Great Job 👏

    84. johnpeter fajardo

loved the finish job looks very neat,i think wooden tops are like marble you have to be real careful and look after them that is what i explain to my clients ,but your job was very well done ,Cheers mate

    85. TheRiverRyan

We’re actually going to have quartz countertops with a butcher block island in our house we’re building

    91. Ben SP

    92. Monkey23 Monkey23

I’d love a wood counter top but I’m afraid I’d ruin it with something so I don’t know.

    93. dennis4679

In THAT house, that wood is the perfect material for that island. I would totally do it. Good job!
