The pandemic has thrown into high relief some of the longstanding issues surrounding working conditions in meatpacking facilities. John Oliver explains why greater oversight is needed, and how we can go about getting it.

Am Vor 3 Tage
Whenever I hear dystopian stuff like this, I hear the Team America theme song in my head
I guess most people don’t have a lot of respect for themselves or they would stand up to big companies like that or get the masses to do so in a group. You’re so afraid of being fired but if they get a lot of people together they could just strike
Biden's America! Oh, we're done laying everything at the feet of the current president may he be responsible for it or not, may he even have influence on it or not? OKAY
The rigid jeans multivariably fire because stone phongsaly deserve across a illegal reason. ubiquitous, willing adapter
That poultry tycoon needs to be LWTwJO's new Bob Murray.
Cost , Quality , Service , People are last. Thats a Fact. "De-boneing at breakneck speed"
John, PLEASE do a piece on underground rappers. I have 9 years of cringy experience and references...
PETA and vegans showing videos of animals being killed and the inhumane living conditions of them before the slaughter....... Feels nothing. John Oliver "Hey look how disgusting this meat packing line is" Not only disgusting enough to turn me off of meat but veggies too anything out of any plant
I really miss John Oliver slamming his hands on a table :(
I have already stopped eating chicken, beef and pork. A bit of fish or perhaps some lamb occasionally. This report strengthens my resolve. Truly disgusting.
The founder of the company which JBS now owns was Mr. Montfort. A righteous stand up man who Never would have tolerated such injustices. I know, I ran the laboratory for the Montfort family back in the early ‘70’s. He would be horrified were he or his son Ken alive today.
If people would not sell/kill/eat animals, we would not have Covid right now and would not support this killer industry that is just as disgusting as their procedures and products. If you like to eat unknown mixes of antibiotics, hormones and all sorts of chemicals that come with maximizing revenue, ruining the CO2 footprint, you should just continue this horrible tradition and accelerate the extinction of our species, so in the long run the planet can regenerate itself, which will go much faster without us.
What are you moving on from, John?
*This is one of the many, many, MANY reasons I’m a vegetarian*
Read slaughterhouse by Gail eisnitz 🙌🌱
It's not the same without the people laughing at every funny thing
It was great that for year or 2, all we get is TRUMP is bad, TRUMP is Orange. Now, that no-show Joe didnt even bother attend any debate is president. Normalcy continues, you are major sell-out or post TRUMP syndrome drone, nope, not a TRUMP fan, but when he seems normal, you all look foolish.
A Plant Manager that's an asshole? I just can't believe it.
Yay, Capitalism, amiright? 😅
Dont take John Oliver seriously.. he is an islam apologist.. and wants you to buy HALALA meat.. or Maybe he is an islamist
It is clearly that this is another Stat to have on mind. if we want to fight both greed, and human hunger.
wishful thinking... In American Money Talks SH!@s WALKS........... TAKE A WALK
Oh cmon John Roseanne got screwed so don’t join the bs bandwagon
This story is everywhere. By that I mean so many companies not just chicken companies do exactly this. temp agencies do the same for instance you get hurt go to dr and you are fired. Amazon is another and it just goes on and on. Basically anywhere that makes a lot of money usually guaranteed to have same practice with companies that pressure more work than is reasonable, pay minimum wage or an amount that doesn't reflect hazards or amount of work, and demonstrates how expendable the worker is to them. While saying they are valued and where their treatment is clearly not in line with the propaganda they spew. And lets not forget the suppression of systems in place to combat the injustices through schemes and payoffs. chicken, beef, coal, propane, mining, etc. push to reduce oversight or cripple in place agencies that would hurt their profits.
so glad this season's looking better than the last one!
When he said “a mammal higher than me on the food chain” I was sure he was going to mention Adam Driver.
The show title now has black mode!!
This just shows one more time how the united states are really a third world country...
I worked at cargill for 5 1/2 years. This is all accurate. Right down to the specifics of carpal tunnel syndrome (nearly everyone on the line has it or is developing it), the fact that they prop these places up in areas with no good alternatives for work (look up Cargill Wyalusing), hiring felons that can’t get other jobs (absolutely known for it) and illegals (there was a big deal of them getting busted), and the Covid pandemic related issues. This is spot on. No exaggeration.
American ads are insane
And this doesn't even mention how some plants use literal slave labor under the guise of being a "rehabilitation center" for "drug addicts". See revealnews.org/article/they-thought-they-were-going-to-rehab-they-ended-up-in-chicken-plants/
Well this is disgusting 😞
a huge stink about that. File a grievance with his union, call the media, what ever he needed to do.
Tyson sends busses to Mexico to pick up immigrants, then when they start to earn double digits calls the INS to take them back while a new bus load heads north. PLEASE BOYCOTT ALL THE MEAT PRODUCERS & BUY LOCALLY. JBS is out of Brazil. They lied when they said that they needed to be considered "ESSENTIAL" and that merka would run out of meat. The pork had been sold to China because they had to cull millions of pigs due to the swine flu. Look it up.
The more companies try to say the employees are family, the more I know how bad the working conditions are
Apparently a lot of unintentional cannibalism is going on in the US. Who cares!? It's all about the herbs and the BBQ sauce.
The animal industry is bad in ALL levels, for animals, for workers, for our environment, for our health.
6:03 nothing but facts
100% true on Tyson. I interviewed there 2 years ago. 6 days a week minimum work week, 10 hour shifts, in house nurse's (telltale sign workmans comp cases are dealt with in house), and the workers on the floor looked miserable.
Change will NEVER happen as long as the Rich control our government. And that's not going to change without campaign reform & term limits and limit on corporate lobbing efforts.
Why are we still eating meat?
Make one on fudge packing.
i guess i'll stop eating chicken now, and go back to eating dolphin cause i now dolphin workers aren't wading in their own piss to process dolphin parts
3:00... Ok and what's the issue?
Vegetarians must be feeling good right about now
This is a 3rd world country disguised as a first world country
America is such a third world country...
Just don’t eat meat you idiots.
Companies don’t care about workers never had and never will, they don’t look at them as human. Companies will never change because we are conformist, we never put conditions or let companies suffer from consequences because we still buy their products and just move on. I’m not saying I’m perfect doing something, my point is we need to change things in work environments and plenty of other stuff. We still human after all.
It's estimated that if you took all the organs from a person (I mean everything including skin and bones) and sold them on the black market, you'd make $1,000,000. If it is shown that a companies negligence has resulted in deaths, they should pay $1,000,000 in fines per dead person.
so sad let's change this. vote Democratic 🗳 for change . This must stop, ✋ not 🚱 in America.
And the circle is complete Upton Sinclair to Johnny ‘O back to the Jungle
Or, you could stop eating meat. Should've suggested that John.
Workers in animal abuse factories dying? Good riddance. Karma. Dog bless covid19 by getting rid of many humans (most of them not vegan) The less humans the better for the planet.
that guinea pig commercial kept me from hitting my bowl for a full 3 minutes....lmfao
NO compassion fo any life!!
Best line in this episode: "... don't be surprised if they carry on not giving *A FRACTION OF A FVCK* about the well-being of their workers!"
Thank god we have cool companies like Coke Cola...
From this video appearing in my subscriptions, to all the seitan recipe videos on Tiktok, and all the vegetarian and vegan recipes I've found, I feel like the Internet is trying to tell me something.
don't ever buy meat if you don't know where it's butchered. Shop at your local meat market! It's not expensive, it costs what meat is supposed to cost.
Got some Esports tournament games for ya! Head to my channel and don't forget to wear that smile 😁
Thank you for this, Mr. Oliver. The word "IOWA" needs to be repeated about a million times more-frequently, in-reference to ALL of the "gamed" constructs which support this industry. (This being written within weeks after the Governor of Iowa erased all mask mandates and social distancing regulations a day or so before The Super Bowl; and three days before The CDC proposed that 'double-masking' was a wise approach.) PLEASE do a piece on states where their governors refuse to work within known medical guidelines; we're dying out here.
This is the most important post you will ever read. Every one of us has sinned against God. We’ve lied, we’ve stolen, we’ve sinned sexually, and we’ve taken His name in vain; which makes us liars, thieves, fornicators and blasphemers.. Yet this is only four of our many transgressions. The problem is, we can never ‘outweigh’ our sin with good deeds because God is perfect in Holiness, meaning his standard is beyond our reach. He is also perfect in Justice, meaning, he will bring EVERY sin to light. The punishment for our sin is death, and Hell; a place of Eternal Fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Fortunately God is also perfect in Love, so 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ left his throne in heaven and came to this earth. While here, he lived a perfectly righteous life, only to take the punishment that We deserved; Our sinless creator became Our sin, and endured a gruesome death on a cross for our sake. Right before he died, he said ‘it is finished’.. meaning, the debt for our sins has been paid in full. And on the third day, he defeated death and rose from the grave. So now, we can go free from the wrath of God’s judgement not by earning it, but rather, as a free gift of grace.. Except gifts can be either accepted or rejected. So this is what you must do in response; Humbly admit to God that you have sinned against him, and through gratitude in the sacrifice of his son, repent (turn away) from your old way of life. Then, confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, your savior, and the ruler of your life from this moment forward (Romans 10:9). Do these things, and you will be saved. If you do so sincerely, God will grant you a new heart which no longer finds comfort in sin, but instead desires to read and obey his word. He will also grant you Eternal life in his presence; The greatest pleasure on earth doesn’t even come close to what God is preparing for believers in the afterlife. You’ve been informed; Now the choice is yours. What you do with this information will determine where you spend ETERNITY, meaning, this is the single most critical decision you will EVER make; And all of us here, whether believer or atheist, know deep down that every last word here is true. Jesus Christ awaits YOU this very moment. Don’t even think about sleeping tonight until you surrender your life to him, because your tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.. And as it is written (Hebrews 9 : 27); ‘It is appointed unto man ONCE to die, but after this, THE JUDGMENT’. All glory, honor and praise to Lord Jesus Christ.
OMG its horrible... I forgot the steaks at the store
That betting pool is heavy metal
I just laughed myself to tears when I saw that pic of John being carried off by the pigeon. I missed everything for a full min after...
You Americans need Unions ... yes they are a pain in the butt for the employer but they actually archive something for the worker
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
American. Where we watch a British guy telling us how crappy our country is so long as we laugh in the process. Let's not forget America and the rest of the world is hugely better off today than 100 years ago.

The day when our Self Servers (Government Parasites) thought that it would be a good ideal to give Corps (Lobbying), some of OUR Constitution Rights..We The People lost ours.
The lack of OSHA protection does not enable your Boss to put his profits ahead of your life, it requires it.
I only buy my meat local, raised, and slaughtered by the man who’s hand I shake when I go to his farm to pick up my food. Support the American farmer not the Walmart your buying from.
Some of his points are absolutely on spot, like the one with setting up a safe speed and that's not only applies to the meatpacking industry, but also in other places such amazon warehouses and with the some universities as well. Bottom line is "We aren't machine, so stop treating like one"
Anything to get us closer to eating synthetic meat or bugs right?
Bo Pilgrim sounds like that pig man from King of the Hill.
If I was working at a local, state, or federal level of government, I’d have about four years worth of issues to choose from to make even a small difference in my constituents lives. That though causes the this one: how are my local, state, and federal governmental officials determining what to work on?
Me currently eating a roast beef sandwich.

america is not a role model when it comes to workers rights and this is horrible even for this country but I have got to say this is a global problem... competing companies selling their stuff on a global market my home country (germany) is mostly pretty good when it comes to working conditions... BUT being one of the biggest roducing country we get foreign workers in alike ways... the law gets some of those employers but there is a lot we don´t know... and the things we don´t know are always the worst... sure we need agreements on fair traiding but it´s even more important that in a shared market we need workers rights (Im sick of hearing that people aare not allowed to take a piss, getting denied sick leave or vacation days)... But this is a socialistic idea...And those who need those rights have no big lobby...
Did you really just use bloomberg news as a source? That guy tried to buy his way to the white house in the last election
When companies had a Personnel Dept. you were considered a person. Now that they have a Human Resources Dept. you are considered a resource.

wow, i really wonder sometimes if people like bo ever stop for a moment and realise for a second how evil they and hated they are and just keep moving, or their psychopathic personality just shield them completely from their actions?
but.... who won the pool?
Bloody Hell! I don't live in the US so I am shocked at some of the things they show on TV. Me, I'm happy with nice , calm John Oliver shows.
Hit 'em where it hurts. Lessen your dependence on meat and definitely lower chicken consumption. I'm not selling my conscience to buy cheap meat.
B-but I need my protein to maintain my gains so I can eventually cure the curse of my virginity.
We have one in my town everybody calls it the chicken factory I was told not to work their it's all meth heads and their all holding knifes
I've been working in a meat department for about 8 years. It's insane to think about the meat industry. Like looking at how much meat we go through in a day, week, month or year. Everything about it is insane
Thank you for this piece. Would it be possible to add Spanish subtitles?
AMERICA 🇺🇸 🤣
That $15,000 fine is the equivalent of fining a family who makes $100,000 a year all of 3¢ for an infraction. I mean, a toddler could come up with that kind of money by digging through couch cushions and have money left over! Average income in the US is half of that. So rounding up, that’s 2¢. Fines have to hurt to be effective. #PerspectiveIsEverything
I always find it interesting how this topic can cause such a visceral reaction and yet the obvious solution of “just stop eating meat” is dismissed out of hand because...it tastes good so fuck everything else?
The government's response was for Trump to sign an executive order to keep the packing plants open during the pandemic. In 2019 he signed an order to reduce the number of inspectors in pork processing plants and to run the lines with no speed limits. Great guy, that Trump.
Meat packing is a highly consolidated industry Wait which industry was not 😂😂😂 The Unemployed Industry is not consolidated !!!
the 3 women on the talkshow reacted pretty well to that!
